Lexmark

At Lexmark, we simply believe that protecting the environment is the right thing to do. Our goal is to provide customers with the best printing solutions in the world, and this means solutions that are also best for our environment. Our comprehensive practices are continuously evolving and include every aspect of our business - from the design and manufacturing phase, to product distribution and packaging, through to educating our customers on how to best use our products and solutions, and finally, responsible end-of-life management.
For Lexmark to become true leaders in environmental sustainability, it is not enough to show leadership in one area alone. We have taken a researched and holistic approach to ensure we make significant enhancements in the use of resources, through every phase of our product life.
Manufacturing, Design and Logistics
All Lexmark manufacturing facilities are ISO 9000, 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified. Our products are designed to meet (and in many instances exceed) many of the global environmental standards such as ROHS and WEEE. More than 99% of the materials used in Lexmark printers can be recycled. In the last ten years, we have reduced our supplies packaging size by 24% to reduce the quantity of pallets and trucks required to transport our products.
Usage
While focusing heavily on more efficient use of paper, Lexmark also recognises the impact energy and cartridges have on the usage phase of the product lifecycle. Lexmark is a founding member of the Energy Star program. On average, Energy Star imaging equipment is 30% more efficient than regular products and we continue to invest considerable resources into our products to drive more efficient use of energy. And, our Right Fit fleet deployment process and MarkVision IT fleet managementsoftware are examples of how we try to ensure optimal sustainability settings can be maintained continuously across the product fleet. Lexmark high-yield cartridges produce twice as many prints as typical industry cartridges, meaning half as many cartridges must be built, shipped and recycled.
End of Life
When each consumable cartridge is used, and each product comes to the end of its serviceable life, Lexmark has systems in place to ensure responsible disposal. Lexmark is a foundation partner of the ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' program and has kept more than 1.1 million kgs out of landfill. Lexmark also has consumer and office product recycling programs available.
The Way We Work
We are also working to reduce our own carbon footprint. Lexmark operates a strict policy in its own offices and has ambitious targets and has implemented a number of consumption reduction, waste minimisation and carbon offsetting schemes around the world. As a result of these efforts, Lexmark headquarters experienced an 11% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 to 2006, with Lexmark worldwide reducing its C02 footprint by 3%.
