A recent poll on Planet Ark’s RecyclingNearYou website asked ‘Who should pay for the recycling of electronic waste (eg, computers, TVs)?” Of the 1,500 responses 54% said ‘The original manufacturer.’ Well, the ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ program has led the way since it began in 2003! The participating manufacturers, Brother, Canon, Epson, Konica Minolta and Lexmark provide you with a free service by paying for the collection, transport and recycling of your used cartridges.
A system where the original manufacturer pays for the collection and recycling of the products they make is called an Extended Producer Responsibility program. They will become more common in Australia over the coming yearsbut the ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ program commenced 7 years ago has been the longest running voluntary program by Manufacturers initiatedto recycle used cartridges,
Of the other respondents to the RecyclingNearYou poll, 17% said it was the ‘Individual disposing of the e-waste’ that was responsible for paying for it.While 16% said the Sate/Federal Government and 12% said Local Councils should pay.
