Thank you to all the schools who participated in the 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' and Officeworks Schools Competition for 2015.
We received some inspiring answers to the question, 'Why is it important for your school to recycle printer cartridges?' The most popular reasons related to reducing waste going to landfills, education and the new products (like rulers and eWood garden beds) manufactured from recycled cartridges.
The first 200 eligible entrants each received 50 rulers made from recycled printer cartridges thanks to Officeworks.
And the winner of the major prize, an eWood garden bed valued at $1,000 thanks to Close the Loop, was Kareela Public School in NSW. They also received a $300 gift voucher to Bunnings from Officeworks for plants and soil. Their winning answer was:
As a school community, we place a high value on recycling. We currently recycle all allowable components from our networked printers and photocopiers because we know that the chemicals contained within them are potentially hazardous to the environment. This means cartridges (including waste toner) cannot be simply thrown in the waste bin. We also know reducing our amount of electronic waste that currently goes into landfill is important as it is the fastest growing form of generated waste. The ability to recover materials used in cartridges for reuse and repurposing is also a great way to reduce our impact on the environment. The benefits include a reduction in materials used and a reduction in water and greenhouse gases generated in the production process.
