Businesses across Australia can no longer recycle mobile phones, chargers and accessories in their ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' collection boxes.

How to Recycle

Workplaces that have taken advantage of this joint service in the past, or that wish to recycle their mobile phones, batteries and chargers in the future, can still do this directly with MobileMuster for free by either:

  1. posting them in using MobileMuster's reply paid mailing label. Please package the mobile phones, batteries and chargers in a box as per the packaging instructions on the website, or
  2. registering as a permanent collection point with MobileMuster online or by calling 1300 730 070. You will be given free collection boxes, promotional materials and support, free pick up and recycling service as well as an annual report on collections processed.

* For safety reasons please ensure your battery is either connected to its handset when you recycle it, or if you are just recycling the battery please tape over the contacts so they can't come in contact with anything else in the box.

You Can No Longer Recycle Mobiles Through 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark'

Over a year ago, in partnership with MobileMuster, we introduced the capability to accept mobile phones, batteries and accessories in ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' black bags. However, there has been a recent change to the Australian Dangerous Goods Transport Code regarding the carrying of lithium batteries, which are found in some mobiles. To meet the requirements of the Code, lithium batteries must now be separated from the body of mobile phone handsets and securely packaged in bubble wrap. In response to these changes, the logistics provider of our recycling partner (Close the Loop) has advised they will no longer collect 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' bags from workplaces if they contain mobile phones, batteries and accessories.

Close the Loop has ceased the collection of mobile phones, their batteries and accessories from all 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' workplace customers as of 13 June 2012.

Any mobile phones, batteries and accessories that organisations may have sent to Close the Loop in previous bags (or that may be in the bags they are using right now) will be handled as per the previous arrangements with MobileMuster.

The service to provide the collection and recycling of used printer cartridges via the black collection bags remains unchanged. We ask that you no longer place any mobile phones, their batteries or accessories into our bags. In addition, please remove all MobileMuster stickers, fliers, posters etc that you may have used previously.

You can download a free poster to communicate these important changes in your workplace.

These emails can be used to notify your staff (and/or students) about the changes to mobile phone recycling in your organisation. The first e-mail is suitable for organisations that have registered with the MobileMuster program. The second email is for workplaces that will no longer have a mobile phone recycling option. Simply cut and paste the relevant text below into an email and circulate.

[insert organisation name] is still committed to mobile phone recycling and our workplace has joined MobileMuster, the official recycling program of the mobile phone industry.

You can now recycle your old mobile phone through the MobileMuster collection box located [insert location]. You can also use this box to recycle your broken and unused mobile phone batteries*, chargers and other accessories.

Research shows that most Australian homes have at least one old mobile stashed away in a drawer - and some have 4 or 5. If that's you, why not empty out that draw and bring your old and unused mobiles in to work and recycle them?
