Participating and Supporting Brands

‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' is an example of an effective voluntary producer responsibility program. That means the participating manufacturers cover the cost of collecting, transporting and recycling their own cartridges as well as promoting the program to workplaces like yours and to the general public.

This means that when you put a cartridge from one of our participating brands - Brother, Canon, Epson, HP, Konica Minolta, or Kyocera – in a ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ collection box at your workplace or at a participating retailer, that manufacturer pays for the cartridge to be recycled. They also cover the costs of promoting and maintaining this free service.  They are taking full responsibility for their cartridges – and they should be congratulated for doing so.

When you put a cartridge from a supporting brand - Toshiba, Lanier, Fuji Xerox Australia, Samsung, Panasonic, Oki, Sharp or Lexmark - into one of our boxes that manufacturer covers the cost of recycling their cartridge. Some of these manufacturers also have their own collection programs.

But if you put a cartridge from any other manufacturer in a collection box, someone else pays for its recycling. Generally this cost is covered by the recycler, Close the Loop, or through higher costs to the program generally.

You can help us make sure we can continue to provide a free recycling service by reducing the number of non-participating manufacturers' cartridges in your collection boxes.

If your workplace uses lots of these cartridges you could:

  • Contact the manufacturer to see if they run their own collection program or
  • Switch machines to one of the manufacturers who are taking responsibility for their cartridges
