Home battery systems will become more and more important in order to maximise the capabilities of rooftop solar.

Home battery systems will become more and more important in order to maximise the capabilities of rooftop solar.

One of the world’s biggest energy providers will be producing household battery systems within Australia after buying an Adelaide battery manufacturing factory from German company Sonnen.

Shell purchased the firm in order to further sharpen its focus on low-carbon energy generation through the New Energies arm of its business. The facility will aim to produce about 10,000 home batteries each year in order to keep up with Australia’s burgeoning demand for the product.

Sonnen had established itself as a pioneer in the energy market by combining its technology with new business models for a decentralised energy system and had already installed over 3,000 battery systems around Australia in recent years. In recent years Australia has become one of the world’s major growth markets for home energy storage systems, which makes sense given our nation’s voracious appetite for home solar systems (Australia has the highest rate of household solar uptake in the world).

“Full ownership of Sonnen will allow us to offer more choice to customers seeking reliable, affordable and cleaner energy,” said Mark Gainsborough, Executive Vice President of New Energies at Shell, said in a statement.

“Together, we can accelerate the building of a customer-focused energy system in support of Shell’s strategy to offer more and cleaner energy solutions to customers.”
